A Day in the Life of… A New Season for Mom

For this series each week of August, I invite you to take a sneak peak into a few moms’ lives and then on August 29th, I hope you’ll join us by linking up “A Day in the Life” of a fill in the blank post about you & your season of life! Today please meet Angela… aka a mom with a new season of life coming her way.

Written by Angela, Contributing Writer

My name is Angela and I’ve been married to my preacher husband for 11 years.  We have 3 daughters and a son living here on this earth with us and we have a daughter and a son living in Heaven too!  God has been so good to us!

Recently we moved from a very small 3 bedroom house to a much larger 4 bedroom house.  And by “much larger” I mean  much larger!!  We’ve been so busy with repairs and updates and other extra curricular things like back to school shopping, piano lessons, freezing corn, making jams, and planting my new fall garden that I haven’t been able to slow down long enough to think straight.  🙂 Did I mention I teach Sunday School and help my husband with the teenagers at church??

Our children attend a Christian school in our area…in our back yard actually…where my husband teaches Bible in the High School.  Our youngest {ages 5 and 6} will both be in kindergarten this year, so that will leave me at home to get things done on my own.

So many changes….It will be a whole new life for me.

Before my children were born, I taught 5th and 6th grades in a Christian School in Kentucky.  That was ten years ago.  For the past ten years I’ve been a stay at home mom with a baby on one hip and a toddler underfoot…if not more than one toddler.  So, now begins this new phase in my life.  My plans are to scrub the house every day until shines and sparkles, have a very nutritious, 7 course meal on the table every night when husband and kids come home, and something yummy baking in the oven!!  Life will be perfect.  Right??

Well, maybe not quite…  I’m not sure what life will be like just yet with so many changes on the horizon. I am looking forward to meeting my husband for lunch once a week.  We have never had family close by, so finding a babysitter is like pulling teeth – which I’ve never personally done, but I can imagine is not pleasant.  🙂  We used to take the kids to lunch with us – now, we’ll get to go out and eat all alone!!  Except I do find myself wondering what I’m supposed to be doing when I’m “kid-free”.  What does one talk about when there aren’t any children around to care for??  I can’t remember……??

I’m also looking forward to blogging and building my blog.  I love to can and freeze fresh produce right out of my garden.  I love the idea of living naturally and off the land.  I find it very satisfying and rewarding.  I have set goals – such as I’d love to have a root cellar some day and I’d love to raise my own chickens!!  The very next thing on my agenda is to figure out how to make my own bread, biscuits, tortillas, and these kids of things!

You can follow me and my progress {and failures 😉  } at Hidden Treasures.  {If you have any recipes you’d like to share or tips for me, I’d be glad to have them too!  I love to get comments!}  I love to blog about this journey of healthy living we’re on and this Christian Life we’re given to live!!  I hope to encourage and inspire as many ladies as I can through it.  Sometimes it’s nice to know that you’re not alone.  There are others – plenty of others – that have been where you are, or ARE where you are.  🙂  You’re not alone, friend!!  We haven’t had a schedule recently, as we’ve been running to and fro trying to accomplish more than humanly possible.  We are looking forward to the school year so we can settle back down to a routine.

Our perspective weekly routine:

7:00 ~ wake up
7:30 ~ Get out of bed {really, no one should have to be around me in the morning!!}
7:30 – 8:15 ~ Get the kids dressed, fed and ready for school
8:15 – 8:25 ~ Kiss the kids goodby  {Our back yard is connected to the parking lot of the Christian school they attend – couldn’t ask for better!!}
8:25 – 3:00 ~ Kids at school/I clean, work the garden, blog, freezer cook, read, decorate…  Believe me, I can always find something I want to do.

I do have to be prepared for anything though, as my husband will call and ask for something without a moment’s notice.  It could be he needs me to go do something like a bank run, or he may want me to bring him lunch.  He may just call to tell me that someone is going to come over so I can talk to them about something specific or give them something.  Sometimes he forgets his things and leaves them at home and he needs me to bring them to him.  Whatever it is, it usually has to be done pretty quickly which means I have to be ready to go!!   After school is never really certain either.  We usually try to have all homework done by 4:00.  Dinner served by 5:00 and cleaned up by 6:00 so that we can practice piano, play and get ready for the following day by 7:00.  Bed time is usually between 8:00 and 8:30.  Wednesdays we have church and on special weeks such as Revival or other Conferences we have church at 7:00 too, which means bed time will be a little later…but that’s ok.  It never killed anyone yet.  🙂

The weekends are a little different.

We try to take Friday night for a “family night”.  We may go out and play at a park, or jump on the trampoline.  We may go to the mall and window shop or we may go bowling or mini golfing!!  A bonfire in the back yard is always in style!  You just never know…a picnic on the river is always fun!!  I have 4 children and there are 4 weeks in the month…which means each child gets one week out of the month.  That week is called the “special week”.  If it’s your special week, you get to chose one special thing at the grocery store , sit up front every time you go anywhere…unless mommy and daddy are both going…then mommy sits up front.  🙂  You also get to stay up later on Saturday than everyone else and do something special with Mama.  That could be baking cookies, doing a craft, or playing a game…anything goes!!  It’s our special time and it helps me to have a little one-on-one time with each of them.

Life is crazy, but we have fun!  If you’d like to keep up with us and our crazy fun, you can follow us at Hidden Treasures.  You can also like us on Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest!!
