The Importance of Eating Breakfast

Last week the first flu fighting food was pumpkin and we learned how much of a super food they really are! Pumpkins are loaded with carotenoids, high in fiber, are an ample source of vitamins and low in carbohydrates!

I gave you a Pumpkin Pear Muffin recipe which would be really simple to pull out in those rushed mornings for a quick breakfast.

Did you know that it is VERY important to eat breakfast? Did you know that breakfast can help keep you healthy during cold & flu season?

This week the focus is on Breakfast!

To be completely honest, I am not a good breakfast eater so I need to hear what I am writing the most! Usually I will have a cup or two of coffee, maybe a granola bar and not eat until lunch. This has just been my habit for a long time and I know I need to change this.

So anyone who has ever told me it’s good to eat breakfast was right! Breakfast gives you energy, helps with weight control, helps build your immune system among many other things. So, with several benefits that eating breakfast can do plus getting into the habit of eating breakfast helps fight the flu, I am going to give you and more importantly me 5 Reasons to Eat Breakfast: (in no particular order)

1. Breakfast foods are “Nutritious & Delicious” There are generous amounts of breakfast ideas floating all around on Google and probably some in your recipe box that have been passed down from generations. Take the traditional recipe you have or that you find and substitute the unhealthy ingredients for more nutrient dense ones. Here are some ideas:

      • Green Smoothies
      • Protein Shake
      • Cottage Cheese
      • Omelets
      • Oatmeal
      • Yogurt and Granola
      • Fruit and Peanut Butter
      • Fruit and Cheese
      • Pumpkin Blueberry Pancakes

2. You are setting a healthy example for your kids. I know this is something I need to work on! Since I am lucky enough to be a stay at home mom I know I set the tone and example for what my kids think healthy means. If they see me skipping breakfast or making unhealthy choices and not eating fresh real food, they are going to want to do the same and eventually start following the example I set for them and this goes for everything in life really.

3. Breakfast gives you energy needed to start the day. Between the time you go to bed and the time you wake up and eat breakfast there are generally 8-12 hours so essentially your body was fasting during that time and when you eat breakfast in the morning you are “breaking” the fast and that’s how we get the term breakfast. Glycogen is restored when you eat a healthy breakfast which helps to give energy to your muscles and refuel your energy tank. I can definitely relate because some days when I don’t eat breakfast I feel sluggish.

4. Increases you metabolism. When you eat breakfast your metabolism speeds up from digestion which then helps rev up your metabolism for the rest of the day. According to Today on MSNBCStudies indicate that eating breakfast may increase resting metabolism by 10 percent and reduce the risk of obesity and diabetes.

5. Helps you maintain a healthy weight. The Mayo Clinic states, “Eating breakfast may reduce your hunger later in the day, which may make it easier to avoid overeating. When you skip breakfast, you may feel ravenous later and be tempted to reach for a quick fix – such as vending machine candy or doughnuts at the office” I believe that to be true because I have found myself on several occasions skipping breakfast and feeling starving that I eat whatever and/or sometimes I feel as though I deserve to eat a “bad choice” in food because I haven’t eaten anything all morning or afternoon. People who choose to eat breakfast usually make healthier choices throughout the day and get the vitamins they need to sustain a busy day including vitamin C and D, iron, calcium and fiber.

What do you eat for Breakfast in the mornings?
